DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The Department of Chemistry of Chanchal College is committed to impart quality education in Chemistry and foster scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and a spirit of inquiry among students. Affiliated with the University of Gour Banga, the department strives to create an enriching academic environment that combines conceptual understanding with practical learning and promotes the application of chemical knowledge to real-world problems. The department offers undergraduate education in Chemistry, emphasizing a balanced approach to theoretical knowledge and practical learning.The department follows the undergraduate curriculum framework based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, as implemented by the University of Gour Banga. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in Chemistry, interdisciplinary exposure, and opportunities to develop practical and professional skills.

Department of Chemistry offers teaching and learning support in the following course categories:

Chemistry Major: Provides an in-depth understanding of the fundamental branches of Chemistry, including Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry, along with relevant theoretical and practical components. The course aims to develop advanced subject knowledge, analytical abilities, and a foundation for higher studies and research.

Chemistry Minor: Offers students an opportunity to study Chemistry as a subsidiary discipline, strengthening their understanding of chemical principles and their applications alongside their major subject.

Skill Enhancement Course (SEC): Focuses on developing practical, technical, and application-oriented competencies. These courses help students enhance laboratory skills, analytical abilities, and other relevant skills that support further education and career development. The SEC course includes 'Food Adulterants', 'Disaster Management' and 'Enveronmental Conservation'.

Multidisciplinary Course (MDC): Introduces students from different academic disciplines to the relevance of Chemistry in everyday life and contemporary society. It promotes interdisciplinary learning and an appreciation of the role of Chemistry in health, food, the environment, materials, and sustainable development.

The curriculum encourages progressive learning through theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and the development of subject-specific and transferable competencies. The department emphasizes a student-centred approach to teaching, combining classroom lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and laboratory-based learning. Practical classes enable students to gain experience in chemical analysis, experimental techniques, preparation of chemical compounds, interpretation of experimental results, and the safe handling of chemicals and laboratory equipment.
